POKÉMON CARD TRADING 101
Trade smarter.
Start with the card.
You do not need to memorize every set. Learn to identify the exact card, check its condition, find recent comparable sales, and agree on value before making a trade.
Identify it exactly
Record the Pokémon name, card number, set symbol, language, rarity and whether it is holo, reverse holo, first edition, promo or a special art. Similar-looking cards can have very different values.
Inspect condition
Under bright light, check both sides for whitening, scratches, dents, creases, edge wear and poor centering. Never call a raw card “mint” without inspecting it closely.
Price the same version
Compare several recently sold listings—not asking prices. Match the exact set, number, language, finish and condition. Graded cards must match the grading company and grade.
Make a fair offer
Add the realistic values on each side. A small difference is normal; cash can balance a trade. Do not use one unusually high sale to justify a price.
Trade safely
Meet in a staffed card shop or public place. Online, use a reputable marketplace, tracked shipping and buyer protection. Photograph cards and packaging before sending.
Protect the cards
Use a soft sleeve plus top loader or semi-rigid holder. Secure shipped cards against sliding, bending and moisture. Never tape directly over the card opening.

Condition can outweigh rarity.
- Near MintClean surface, sharp corners, almost no visible wear
- Lightly PlayedMinor edge or surface wear, no major damage
- Moderately PlayedClear wear or scratches, still structurally sound
- Heavily Played / DamagedHeavy wear, bends, creases, peeling or water damage
Before you say “deal”
For expensive cards, verify the grading certification number and consider authentication. If someone creates urgency, refuses clear photos or asks you to pay outside a protected platform, walk away.
